We are delighted to welcome Jamie to the team at Mattair as our new Project Engineer. With over 16 years experience of working in the industry, Jamie brings with him a wealth of knowledge in all aspects of air conditioning, refrigeration and heat pumps, together with his ability to work on the more complicated systems such as VRF and Chillers.

In his role as Project Engineer, Jamie will use his technical knowledge and experience to liaise between our customers and engineers ensuring all jobs run smoothly, efficiently and on time.

Project Overview: Sheffield Installation

Our latest project took us to Sheffield, where we were tasked with enhancing the indoor climate of a commercial space as part of a larger refurbishment initiative.

Our engineers successfully installed two 7kW wall-mounted Fujitsu air conditioning systems, providing year-round heating and cooling to ensure a consistently comfortable environment for the new tenants occupying the space. These high-performance units were chosen for their reliability, efficiency, and sleek design — ideal for a modern office setting.

🌍 Bringing an Old AHU Up to Modern Standards: Environmental Upgrade at One of Our Client's Sites

At Mattair Maintenance Ltd, we’ve successfully completed a major upgrade of the Air Handling Unit (AHU), bringing it up to modern environmental and efficiency standards. Our technical team was on site to oversee the commissioning of the upgraded system.

🔧 What We Did:

EC Fan Upgrade: We replaced the old fixed-speed belt-driven fans with high-efficiency EC motors. These fans now feature speed control, enabling variable fan speeds based on demand, with the option to add CO2 control in the future. This upgrade significantly reduces the Specific Fan Power (SFP) and improves overall energy efficiency.

New DX Coil Installation: We replaced the existing DX coil and installed an inverter-controlled condenser with heat pump technology to enhance performance and efficiency, contributing to a more environmentally friendly system with a lower carbon footprint.

Modern Refrigerant: By switching to R32 refrigerant, the system now benefits from a reduced Global Warming Potential (GWP) compared to the previous refrigerant, further minimizing its environmental impact.

System Cleaning and Fan Guards: As part of the upgrade, we performed a thorough cleaning of the AHU to ensure peak efficiency and installed fan guards for enhanced safety and protection.

By upgrading this old AHU, we’ve not only improved performance and reduced carbon emissions but also brought the system up to modern standards in terms of sustainability and efficiency, all while saving significantly on the cost of a new AHU.

Cold Room Not Reaching Temperature – A Common but Critical Issue

At Mattair, we understand how vital reliable refrigeration is to our commercial and industrial customers. A malfunctioning cold room can lead to significant losses, whether that’s food spoilage, disrupted operations, or energy inefficiency.

Recently, we were called out to a customer site where their cold room wasn’t reaching the desired temperature. This kind of issue can stem from a variety of causes—from control faults to mechanical failure—but one of the most common (and often hidden) reasons is a refrigerant leak.

Diagnostic Process: Pressure Leak Testing

Once on site, our experienced engineer began with a full inspection of the refrigeration system. To accurately assess the system’s integrity, a pressure leak test was performed.

Pressure testing is a standard method used to identify leaks in HVAC and refrigeration systems. It involves introducing a controlled amount of pressure using an inert gas (often nitrogen) and monitoring the system for pressure loss over time.

In this case, the test revealed a refrigerant leak at the expansion valve on the cold room’s indoor evaporator unit. This kind of leak reduces the system’s cooling capacity and causes the evaporator to underperform—explaining why the cold room wasn’t holding temperature.

On-Site Repair and Re-Testing

The leak was carefully repaired on-site, ensuring all connections were secure and the faulty component was sealed properly. Once the repair was completed, the system underwent a second pressure test to confirm there were no further leaks or pressure drops.

✅ The test passed successfully, and the system was re-commissioned and returned to normal operation. Temperatures in the cold room quickly stabilised, and the customer was able to resume operations with confidence.

Why Early Leak Detection Matters

Refrigerant leaks may seem minor, but they can have serious consequences if left unresolved:

By carrying out a pressure test early, we were able to prevent more serious damage and save the customer from a potentially costly system failure.

We are delighted to announce that Ian Fisher, who recently joined the team at Mattair as Technical Sales Director, was the joint winner of the RAC’s Cooling Industry Awards 2021 in the category of ‘Individual Achievement of the Year’, alongside James Bailey.

Whilst the nomination for the award recognises his achievements with his previous employer, we fully support Ian continuing his work with the Institute of Refrigeration as well as his role as a STEM Ambassador. STEM Ambassadors volunteer their time to inspire young people to progress further in STEM subjects through delivering a range of activities from career talks to practical workshops.

As Ian said “I’ve been a Stem Ambassador now for over 7 years and for much of time thought I was alone in our industry doing it, but that’s not so, I’m part of a fantastic group of people recently headed up by the IOR Institute of Refrigeration who have also played a large role in my journey. Let’s keep just doing what we do and try our best to put RACHP on the radar as a career choice for the next generation”
